Motor City Mitten Mission Kickoff “Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.”

ST CLAIR SHORES – Sunday marked the start of the Motor City Mitten Mission’s “Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.” This weeklong event is to bring awareness and educate the public. To put a spotlight on the “homeless epidemic that is spread throughout our community.” Beginning on November 17, 2024, and lasting until November 23, 2024. The funds collected from the various activities will be used to support the Motor City Mission programs.

Motor City Mitten Mission (MCMM) has a new event planned every day. The kickoff for the event is their ‘Campout and Cookout for Compassion’. The event starts at 6pm and runs till 7am the next morning. Participants register to camp out in the MMCMM parking lot; they are encouraged to bring tents or cardboard boxes to sleep in. Participants can get pledges for the campout as well. The event is located just south of Ten Mile Road on Harper Avenue at 24623 Harper Avenue, in St. Clair Shores.

Other events scheduled during the ‘Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week’ include:

  • Monday, 11/18: MCMM All-Day Plarn Farm Party. Plarn, also known as plastic yarn, is the type of yarn that is made from plastic bags. Participants in the event will learn how to make sleeping mats and pillows from Plarn. The event is located at St. Clare of Montefalco Parish (1401 Whitter Road, Grose Point Park) The Plarn Farm Party is from 4 pm till 7 pm.
  • Tuesday, 11/19: Fill-Our Truck For Homeless. The object of the event is to fill a box truck with MCMM wish list items. Such as bottle water, gallon freezer and storage bags and blankets. There is a complete list of items on the MCMM website. Items collected will be distributed to those who are struggling with homelessness, housing, and getting food on their table. Some people who donate to the “Fill-Our Truck For Homeless” may get Detroit Lion Swag. But every $10 spent will receive an entry to win an authentic autographed Lions’ football. The truck is located at the Meijer in Roseville (30800 Little Mack Avenue, Roseville) parking lot and will be from 10 am till 5 pm.
  • Wednesday, 11/20: MCMM Open House and Volunteer Recruitment Day. Its a meet and greet day. People can come to the MCMM office (24623 Harper Avenue, St. Clair Shores) to meet the volunteers that help with the organization and to see what the organization is all about. The open house will be held from 10am to 7pm.
  • Thursday, 11/21: MCMM Grab and Grub For The Homeless. This is the fifth year for the event, and it will be held at Detroit’s Eastern Market (2934 Russell Street, Detroit, MI) from 11 am to 3 pm. This event is to help the unsheltered population of Detroit.
  • Friday, 11/22: MCMM “Dye-ing For A Cause.” This event will be held at the Detroit Dye House (1418 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI). The event touts that participants will “dive head first and experience a world of color.” People who attend will make three things, two to keep and one for the MCMM. The event cost $75 per person (plus a $1.88 service fee), and people can register at the MCMM website. (Check website for registration and details.)
  • Saturday, 11/23: MCMM Funday Finale Second Hand Boutique Sale. The “Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week” comes to an end on Saturday. What is a better way than to stop by the MCMM Second Hand Boutique? People who stop by can get great sales—50% off of selected items. Plus, there will be complementary food and drinks offered. One hundred percent of the profits will benefit the Motor City Mitten Mission programs. The event/sale runs from 11 am until 4 pm. The Second Hand Boutique is located at 24627 Harper Avenue, St. Clair Shores.

The non-profit Motor City Mitten Mission is a 501(c)3 organization in Michigan. It is dedicated to helping those who are homeless, underprivileged, and fighting for a better life. through the distribution of clothing, food, and other necessities.
